It was a clear, crisp March day in 1849. Robert Darrah was strolling contentedly, hands clasped behind his back, as he contemplated the suitability of this section of his many acres as the site of his long-dreamed-of manor house. At age 60, Robert Darrah operated not only a successful farm, but also a sawmill, and lime kiln; and, in 1835, he erected a schoolhouse. Now, he was ready to retire from active business work, enjoy his nine children, and pursue his civic activities with the Neshaminy Church, the Hatborough and Warminster Turnpike Road Company, and “The Warren Company, for the recovery of stolen horses and other property and the detection of thieves.” He sat down on a stump, noting that he could still see his breath in the thin March sunlight, and tried to visualize the house on the land, as it had existed in his mind for some two years three stories high, made of field stone sealed with stucco; a large front porch, with tall wooden columns made in his own sawmill, facing the stone walk which would be used by guests exiting their carriages at the stairs in the stone wall that bordered the road. He thought about the many modern features that he would incorporate in his house, befitting a successful gentleman farmer and businessman. Yes, he agreed, mentally patting himself on the back, it was going to be a grand house. And, with a little cooperation from the Almighty, as regards to the weather, it would be finished before winter set in. In fact, why was he sitting here musing? There was work to be done, and he’d better get to it.One hundred and fifty-five years later, Mr. Darrah’s dream-house is still standing, and, in fact, is reborn after a careful renovation and rejuvenation. The great manor house has entered the 21st century as an elegant and sophisticated Bed and Breakfast named Darrah House (of course). Tom and Eleanor Everitt acquired this lovely restored property in the spring of 2004. They previously owned and operated a 15-room bed and breakfast inn in the Brandywine Valley of southern Chester County, PA. This experience in hospitality, combined with over 30 years of corporate life moving throughout the United States and England, provides their guests with an experience they’ll want to repeat! Today, you are invited to stay at Darrah House and enjoy one of the four rooms while you explore charming Bucks County. It’s a short, pleasant trip to the antique centers and art galleries of Lambertville/New Hope, the unique shops of Peddler’s Village, the charm and history of Doylestown, and even the hustle and bustle of our nation’s first capital - Philadelphia - not to mention golf, tubing, fishing, theatre...it’s all here, waiting for you at Bucks County’s finest bed & breakfast, Darrah House. So, if you appreciate the finer things of life, come and visit and experience Mr. Darrah’s house as he would have wanted it; and maybe, if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of old Mr. D. himself keeping an eye on the place...no doubt with a proud smile! |
